Eighteenth century France saw many controversial individuals emerge from the shadows as revolution loomed, promoting ideas which had historically been taboo. Many advocated for the most radical of concepts, all in the name of ‘freedom’ and ‘expression’, but actually did nothing more than promote ideas which would corrupt society. Few personify this better than Marquis de Sade.
Despite his documented history of degeneracy, during the mid-20th century, Sade saw an unexpected boom in popularity, with many intellectuals calling him a “genius”, a “deep thinker”, and an “impactful philosopher”. The truth, however, is that the Marquis de Sade was a dark, twisted, and ultimately destructive figure.
