I wish the modern socialist left would take a good hard look at these history lessons, and the consequences these ideas have had on humanity. But I also realise the whole concept of marxist socialism is not to take a good hard look at history, nor develop some critical and independant thinking skills.
From my studying experience, and accepting the comprehensive context and timeline you lay out, it would be hard to convince me that Nixon/KISSINGER were unaware of Pot's activities, goals, attempted coups, etc. and INTENTIONALLY put the situation over the edge with the murderous bombing campaign to ENABLE the Khymer Rouge to finally succeed. A regime also supported by China, which was the point for Kissinger. It is NOT ironic that Soviet-supported North Vietnam helped overthrow him.
